VICENTE DOPICO-LERNER

After Caos

On Display. January 15th - March 15th / 2025

Through works assembled in 'After Chaos,' Vicente Dopico-Lerner (b. 1943) addresses his concerns about the origin of the universe. According to the Theogony of Hesiod, chaos was the origin of everything; it was the first god, the most ancient. The term ‘chaos’ comes from the ancient Greek ???? translated as ‘a space that opens.’ It is understood as a fissure or crack between heaven and earth that opens up so that we may gain access to the mysteries of creation. That fissure is a metaphor for the tireless search for truth that has been the leitmotiv for almost all of the great discoveries and contributions of mankind. Dopico-Lerner knows that one only reaches the truth by starting with active investigation and observation. He is passionate about astronomy and cosmology, and is also an avid student of philosophy and history. His oeuvre always embodies the materialization of a complex cognitive process in which he reflects, questions and tries to find answers to the physical, natural and social phenomena that make up reality.

Gayton studied the visual arts formally at the Academia de San Alejandro in Havana. He later studied graphic design, illustration and advertising. Upon emigrating from Cuba at the beginning of the 1960s, Gayton lived and worked in Spain, Venezuela and Chicago, where he earned a living as a graphic designer and illustrator, eventually settling in Miami. Gayton defines himself as an “archeologist” who explores history, politics, society and the history of universal art. His task is to observe, recognize and immortalize in his works moments and personages that in some way have helped him shape his vision of the universe.

RUBÉN TORRES LLORCA

Ring of fire: a Tale on Life

On Display. January 15th - March 15th / 2025

'Círculos de Fuego', personal exhibition by Rubén Torres Llorca presented by the Kendal Art Center (KAC), is an immersive installation that incites us to an existential journey not without risks and vicissitudes. Making masterly use of icons deeply rooted in our collective imagination and modelers of our individual and social consciousness, "Circles of Fire", establishes a direct dialogue with the receiver that travels through each of the (somewhat Dantean) circles Make up this sample. Art, related legends, daily references and poetry are intermingled in a biting and sensitive proposal at a time. "Circles of Fire" is a journey without return that forces us to review our own itinerary for that risky journey that is our way through life. Rubén Torres Llorca (Havana, 1957) is one of the founding figures of the so-called New Cuban Art Movement that revolutionized the landscape of the visual arts on the island during the 1980s. His work, which is profoundly conceptual, is characterized by a Critical anthropological view of contemporary society.

Ávila, a Cuban artist who carries the essence of the Island wherever he goes, subtly embeds themes of travel and relentless movement in search of a kinder environment within his graphic rhetoric. On the occasion of the exhibition's opening in September 2016, art critic Roxana M. Bermejo penned a brief review titled The Odyssey of Pedro Ávila Gendis, reproduced below.
